Process
Each Dive Steel weight is a fusion of hand crafted workmanship and modern digital design. These weights are not mass produced but are instead designed and made individually, allowing each weight to express its own individuality. I make each weight individually and have written much of the custom software to design, mark, and interpret the weights.
Design Evolution
My development process began with 15 hand-sketched prototypes, tested first in cardboard and plywood. These evolved into four precision CAD models, refined through extensive testing and user feedback.

Biophilic Pattern Generation
Each weight features a unique face pattern inspired by brain coral and emperor angelfish markings. These patterns are generated using custom software that simulates biological morphogen gradient diffusion patterns. These gradient diffusion models connect Dive Steel to the biological world that we seek to appreciate and protect.
Individual Identity
In addition to the brain coral patterning, each Dive Steel is uniquely digitally marked with a serial number and QR code so that it can be logged via the Sea Bottle network. I created the Sea Bottle network because I wanted to allow each weight to have a voice and place in space and time. So much of the modern world consists of faceless, mass produced commodities. That interchangeability means we value these items less. At the other extreme are handcrafted artisan products. While these artisan products are each unique, they don't have an ability to speak so their stories are lost. I wanted Dive Steel weights to each have a story and identity.
